Festival of Quilts Celebration Giveaway :: The Final One and It's From Me!!!!

So we've made it to the end and here is the final #cutandalterfoqgiveaway .....

EDITED ON 04/08/20 AT 12:00 :: THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

This one's from me to you .....

So now it's my turn on the #cutandalterfoqgiveaway but I find it so hard to write about myself ...... Let's start with what I am - I am a daughter, sister, wife, mother, quilter, educator, one time home educator (we did it voluntarily for years ;)), reader, crocheter and lots more things beside.

I have been a longarm quilter for 5 years now and have been quilting for others for 4 1/2 of those.  In 2018 I became a Handi Quilter Educator and I have found my passion - I love teaching.  Hopefully classes will be up and running again soon and I am also going to be teaching patchwork and quilting on domestic sewing machines aswell.  I give talks and run workshops for Clubs and Guilds and I have to say that I love being in this quilting community.  I get to sew, chat and teach like minded people, generally with coffee and cake thrown in.

Giveaway Prize:  Quilted, zippered pouch along with 5 long quarters of Kona Cotton and maybe, just maybe, there's something in the pouch!

Apologies to overseas readers but due to postage costs this prize is limited to UK addresses only

Current Working Situation due to Corona Virus

This is from my newsletter which I have just sent out .... not on the mailing list?  Stay up to date with what's happening by signing up right over there on the left hand side of this page!

How do you start a newsletter in these times?

Whilst I know that many people will be able to sew a great deal whilst we are all at home for the foreseeable future I also know that, for a lot of people, money is going to be tight.  Both my husband and I are self-employed and even though the Government have now outlined their support for the self-employed it won’t really help us much.

I have been slow to announce what I am going to do regarding my longarming business because I just didn’t know.   Like hundreds and thousands of people across the country, I was waiting in limbo to see when schools were going to shut.  When that announcement finally came I had to prepare my girls, one who was very upset the other not so much!  And since then things have changed a pace.

Then there was the announcement on Monday night and it did at least bring some clarity – we are all to stay at home as much as possible.  Luckily my studio is at home so I could still theoretically work.  But would I be irresponsible to ask people to go out to the Post Office to send me their quilt tops?  If they are going out for essential food supplies anyway is it OK to pop to the Post Office?  Could they do prepaid at home and visit a local letterbox on their daily walk?  Could they use a courier company for contactless collection?  These questions and a thousand more are circling around my head.  As someone who may be able to get some work throughout this crisis I really need to and so I have decided what to do.

This is what I have come up with:
  • For the duration of the stay at home period I will still offer longarm quilting to people
  • Quilts top are to be sent to me by any method customers feel safe using
  • All design consultations will be done online
  • Payment will be made direct into my bank account once the quilt is finished
  • I will return the quilt to you by post and confirm the tracking number once it is sent

To be honest, this is the way a vast majority of my customers work with me already and it works very well.

My teaching and demonstration work obviously dried up over night at the beginning of last week and so I have been thinking of alternative ways of being able to offer something online.  I have seen many people, who are more technically savvy than me, already releasing a slew of classes and programmes and feel somewhat left behind.  I am going to have to learn, along with a large number of people, to work in different ways and wondered if there would be any interest in online content, be it FB Live, IGTV, tutorials or classes?  For teaching purposes or just as somewhere to build community through these strangest of times.

I would love to know your thoughts on this and also hear how you are getting by or systems you are putting in place on order to get through this crisis financially.

Stay safe and well and, most of all, sane!

The other thing we have to contend with is a new addition to our family - she arrived 2 weeks ago today and has added an extra layer of chaos to our already turned upside down world.  Will she be a help or a hindrance through these times?  The jury it still out!!

Project Finished :: Black & Silver Jelly Roll Race Quilt

I have a finish - ta-da!!  But with Storm Ciara raging outside I have only been able to take photos inside - when I did just go out I could hardly open the back door!

It's been a long time since I have had a finish post so forgive me my excitement.  This is an old WIP that was on my Projects to Finish list and it's my first finish for Finish Along Q1.

I posted a brief history of this one earlier in the year - click here.

I used wool wadding in a quilt for the first time.  I played around with wool as a second layer when I was quilting my Dream Big samples for the workshop I ran in November last year, but I have never used it as the only wadding for a quilt.  I have to say that it quilted up beautifully and has given a puffiness to the quilt that I don't see with cotton.  The hope is that it will also be warmer and if my daughter is correct there's supposed to be a lot of freezing weather coming our way this month!

It feels wonderful to get to cross something of my list and, even better, I think it's already been claimed for a bed!

Teaching Quilting - what a privilege!

Last week had a week of teaching at Pinhole Quilting in Pinvin, click here to see what I was teaching and the workshop descriptions.  I had such a fun, but very tiring, week!  It is a wonderful thing to be able to be with people as they start their longarm quilting journey and then to see them again and, hopefully, again and again!  I made new quilting friends, renewed friendships and all in all realised how lucky I am to be able to work in an industry that I love and that, generally, brings out the best in people!

Last Thursday was Improv Quilting and below are some progress pics from the day ...

We had black fabric and bright thread for the workshop which is a great teaching aid ....

because it shows up everything so that you can really see what you are quilting.

Students are encouraged to play with thread throughout the day because these machines can take anything from 12wt wool to 100wt silk!  Photo above and below is using Glide Glisten in Gold - lovely!

We started with one quilting motif and stitched it out in varying scales ...

We then added several more motifs ...

and then learnt techniques and designs to join them.

It was amazing to see people's confidence grow throughout the day and some great quilting was done.

The final day of teaching was a Dream Big Panel workshop but that will need to wait for another day and another blog post!

Teeny Tiny Rainbow - A Finish

There have not been many finishes around these parts lately so I am very happy to have a ta da moment for you.  I give you Teeny Tiny Rainbow ....

and as you can it is a little more than a ta da moment - it is also a celebratory moment!

This little mini quilt started life as part of  Sugar Bowl Crafts Scrap Busting Sewalong.  The challenge that week was:

How many squares can you get into a 5" square?

Well I was always going to go small and so managed 100!  I knew that there was method using gridded fusible interfacing but, of course, I didn't want to wait to get some so I used old dressmaking interfacing I had on my shelf and the squares from my cutting mat.  It worked OK but is a bit wonky in places but I absolutely loved the result.

I knew I didn't want this little block to sit languishing on a shelf so I decided to add the white border and then randomly added the second border.  The charcoal and white bits are as they are because they were leftovers from my Mini to Maxi - Churn Dash.  Nothing like using all scraps!

It was only as time marched on that I realised I could turn it into a quilt and enter it into the miniature category.  The quilting happened by chance and I am not sure if it is how I would quilt it if I did it again.  The rainbow squares finish at 1/2" and so I decided to just so some outline squares as stitch in the ditch.  This was actually a first for me on my longarm and I have to say I didn't dislike it as much as I thought.  However it was 5" square not a full size quilt!

Then came a change in plan because I realised that you could see the charcoal fabric behind the white fabric as a dark strip down the middle of the skinny white borders.  Aaaaarrrgh I had planned to quilt the borders with 1 or 2 lines of white stitching extending into the charcoal area and to the edge.  Now I couldn't do that because, to hide that mistake, I needed to quilt a dark line in the middle.  This was done several times and included lots of unpicking but in the end I just had to go with it.  Because of that I decided to quilt straight lines in the resulting charcoal spaces.  I like the difference between lines and grid and the change in direction to the diagonal.  This is something I would use again.

Quilt Stats

Finished Size:  11" x 11"

Fabrics Used:  multicoloured scraps for the rainbow centre and Kona Charcoal and White for the borders

Quilting:  was done on my Handi Quilter Avante longarm machine and I used Glide 40wt thread in Shadow and 60wt thread in Sterling

Wadding:  The Warm Co Warm and White

So the ribbon?  Well it was entered into the Miniature Category at the British Quilt and Stitch Show whichwas held in Uttoxeter over the weekend.  I was delighted to hear it had won 3rd place and also pleased to see that both this and the 2nd placed quilt were modern quilts.  It is lovely to see the rise in the number of modern quilts in all categories now.  Long may it continue!!

2019 Finish Along :: Finish No 1

Oh it feels good to get my first project ticket of my 2019FAL list - a charity quilt for Project Linus.

The jelly roll of fabric was donated quite a while ago and I thought it would be ideal to try piecing on the frame.

This was the first time I have tried this technique and I used the Square Feet from Handi Quilter.  It was brilliant - so quick and easy and very satisfying!

Since moving my machine, I have a lot more space around the back and so I thought I would try pantographs again.  Basically you have a pattern at the back of the machine which you trace with a laser light.  These are called Edge 2 Edge designs.

This is a new one for me and it called Bellflower by Keryn Emmerson.  It stitched out beautifully and gave such great texture.

I have to say that I really enjoyed doing this and, although FMQ is my first love, I would definitely quilt more using pantographs and will shortly be adding it to the services I offer my customers.

The only thing I didn't think about when I decided to quilt it this way, was that you would be able to see the horizontal lines, from piecing on the frame, on the back of the quilt.

In future that would certainly determine what patterns I would quilt on a quilt that had been pieced this way, but there are still plenty of designs that would work.

Here's hoping for another finish before too long!

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHED!!

I am so pleased to announce that my new website has been launched.  It's taken me some time to build and it's not all finished yet b...
