cut&alter Christmas 18 Quilt Along is live!!

I have been working on some secret sewing for the past couple of months and all can now be revealed ....

The timing is incredibly inopportune because, during one of the longest heatwaves that I can remember, I am launching a Christmas Quilt Along!!

The actual launch day was last Wednesday and you can read all about over here.

The pattern has been released in my UKQU shop - head on over to have a look!
There is an early bird discount of 20% until the end of July, and any purchase in a UKQU shop until that time automatically gets entered into a giveaway for a copy of the latest EQ8.

To celebrate the launch of my first pattern over at UKQU, I am running a competition.
For the chance to win a copy of the pattern, full access to the QAL and a fabric bundle from the Silent Night range by Makower, who kindly provided the fabric for this project, then head on over here.
The competition runs until Wednesday 04 July 2018.

The full details can also be found at the tab at the top of the page - CHRISTMAS 18 QAL.

I would love it if you could join me and, of course, it doesn't have to be a Christmas Quilt it can be made in any fabric you choose.  I will have some examples shortly so stay tuned! x

My Best of 2016

Having read other people's posts for My Best of 2016 hosted by Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs, I thought I would take a few minutes and look back at my year (I also took the opportunity of getting some pages up to date at the same time).  One thing I started this year was a monthly review and I have really enjoyed looking back at the months. Sadly I stopped this from August but having just browsed through my posts this is something I would like reinstate for 2017.

However, now we are looking back .... in no particular order and with no particular scientific way of picking them I give you My Best of 2016 ....

I love this little quilt that I made for my Mum's 80th birthday.
I tried lots of new things on it and they all worked.
Best of all she loves it and has it hanging in her lounge!

This gets on the list because it was my oldest WIP - over 6 years to finish but it has stood the test of time because I still love it.
Also it won a rosette at a show in May which made me rather happy!!

This was such a wonderful group to be part of and I learnt so much about so many things!
I am hoping I fit the criteria to be able to join again in 2017 because I still have so much to learn.

My first ever block design for this Blog Hop.
I really enjoyed the process and would love to design more in 2017.

This is definitely my favourite make of 2016, in fact it might be my favourite make to date!
I love that the design in my head came out into the real world just as I imagined it.
I was also really excited to find that I won a Best Piecing rosette at a show in November.

Today we are starting to take down the decorations and I will then be able to look to next year.  I would love to join Yvonne's #2017PlanningParty but I need some quiet time to get my head into gear and really think about what I want to do in 2017.  We have big changes coming up on our family front which I have still to get my head around!!

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - a tutorial

In November I received a package as part of a Travelling Bee I am in.  I realise now that I have never blogged about this Bee .... hmmmm not sure how I have managed to miss that because I love it.  Anyway that post will be for another day because today I am going to share a block I made for Jessie (@jessiemarie1202).

She loves Christmas and always knew her quilt would have a Christmas theme.  I had seen 4 months of blocks being made for her and I had an idea in my head what I would make for her.  However, whilst her notebook contained lots of ideas the one that struck me most was a little pixelated reindeer.

I quickly got out my graph paper and made a sketch and worked out some cutting measurements.  I was delighted to find that it all came together well the first time!!

This is the one I made for her ....

I decided that I would like a Rudolph cushion and thought that I would do a quick tutorial at the same time so here goes.  I decided to do the antlers and face in different fabric as shown below:

I have created a simple .pdf tutorial which you can see over here

If you make one I would love to see it so be sure to tag me in (@cutandalter on IG) or leave a comment below. x

Cloud 9 New Block blog hop

Hello and welcome to any new visitors who have popped over here on the Cloud 9 New Block blog hop.  My name is Abigail and this year it was a pleasure to be part of the 2016 New Quilt Bloggers group which has also led to this exciting opportunity.

Many thanks to Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl, Cheryl @Meadow Mist Designs and Stephanie @Late Night Quilter for hosting this event and for Cloud 9 who generously supplied the gorgeous FQ bundle of their Organic Cirrus Solids.

I have to admit that I sat down many times to design a block and nothing happened, or something happened but it wasn't quite right.  In fact I was beginning to worry that I had bitten off more than I could chew.  Then at the end of August I sat down and doodled and coloured and came up with this:

Then I needed to figure out how to piece it and paper piecing seemed the logical way to go.  Now, I am no expert at paper piecing but I do love the nice clean lines it gives and this is not a technically difficult block.  So without further ado I give you my block - Churned to a T!

Please click here for the paper piecing template

Please click here for the cutting dimensions and instructions

If you are new to paper piecing then I have found the following sites very helpful ....

Artisania - the quirky pattern co - this page has video tutorials and the two showing the actual sewing can be found here and here

Lee from Freshly Pieced wrote a piece for We All Sew which you can read here

Juliet from The Tartan Kiwi

If you really don't like paper piecing but like the look of this block I did make one with regular piecing.  I don't like it quite as much but I think I am going to tweak it.  Let me know if you fancy a tutorial on that.

Following some of the links Yvonne gave us, I have managed to make a rudimentary mock up of what the block would look like made up into a quilt .....

Not only has the New Quilt Bloggers group and this blog hop improved my blogging and sewing skills I have learnt soooo many news things on my computer!

So here's another ....

This reminds me of an Art Deco design and is achieved with one quarter block placed on point.

Whilst I love the block made up as is I enjoyed seeing what it would look like as a mini made up in different layouts ....

Once I had tried the block a couple of times it was time for some pattern testing.  A call out on IG resulted in 6 people - 2 from Jersey, 2 from England and 2 from the States - I just love how this community works!

It was so exciting seeing my design being made up by other people in other fabrics .....

Should I Stay or Should I Go? - A Finish ....

EDITED:  I can now happily say that this quilt is going to stay home after attending a few shows!  I was very happy to receive Best Piecing in Show at the West Country Quilt and Textile Show in November 2016 and 1st Place in the Wall Hanging Category at the British Quilt & Stitch Village in April 2017.

One of the quilts I finished during my recent quilting marathon was my flag quilt, named Should I Stay or Should I Go?  With the time deadline I was under I was not able to take many photos or do a finish blog post before it was delivered to Malvern to be hung in Quilts UK.
It is now safely home and hanging in my studio and here are all the stats ....
Progress posts can be found here, here, here and here!
Started:  21 March 2016
I began playing with the paper pieced stars for the NZ flag on this date - hoping that the referendum on the flag in New Zealand would result in the current flag remaining
Finished: 16 May 2016
Last stitch was put in the hanging sleeve at 1.30pm - with the quilt needing to be delivered to Malvern between 2pm and 4pm!

Originally I thought each flag was going to be A4 in size and there were going to be two maps, one of UK and one of New Zealand, to make a wall hanging.  Then I made a paper pieced star ..... they were as small as I wanted to go as a novice to paper piecing and so the size was determined by them!
I designed the Union Jack block to have correct dimensions on a 3:5 ratio, which are the dimensions for the flag that is flown on land (the flag flown at sea is a 1:2 ratio).

Each flag block measured 50" by 30" unfinished ....

The blue and red fabric for the flags were nearly all to be found in my stash and range from new quilting fabric to vintage dress fabric and everything in between.  I had to buy a couple of blue fat 1/4s to have enough different fabric.  The white fabric for the stripes is Kona White.
Once the two flags were finished I had to decide how to join them together.  I knew there would have to be a border of some type otherwise the demarcation between the flags would be lost.  I chose a navy blue solid and then played with some designs of coloured stripes until I settled on this ....
I love how this made up and actually see a whole quilt in this design ....
When I loaded it onto my frame I still wasn't quite sure how I was going to quilt it.  I thought I would start with straight lines on the white to stabilise it.  The vertical and horizontal ones were easily done using the channel locks but the diagonal lines took rulerwork.  Let's just say that I am now quite proficient with rulers but it takes far more time than I imagined!  I had a problem with the thread shredding aswell which I haven't experienced before.  I also learnt to speed unpick whilst the quilt was on the frame ....

By the time I had quilted the white stripes and the blue triangles, again with straight lines, I realised how little time I had left.  The red cross was straight lines again but this time they were freehand and organic - a much quicker process.  The red diagonal stripes were quilted with freehand matchstick quilting.

I knew I wanted words in the quilting somewhere and the navy border stripes provided the perfect place.  I really enjoyed using the words and can definitely see them appearing in my quilts again.  Below the Union Jack flag are the words:

United Kingdom  Great Britain  home  wedding  Place of Birth  British  Rowington  wedding  love

On top of the New Zealand flag are the words:
New Zealand  Aotearoa  home  motherhood  Wellington  kiwi  Tauranga  love

I loved writing the words with the quilting - I can see more of this on future quilts!

I mulled over the quilting design of the NZ flag over dinner and realised it had to be something I could do relatively quickly - it had to be off the frame that night!  I went swirly and ended up with koru and fish hook designs.  Initially I thought it might look funny with the straight lines of the Union Jack but actually it works and in a way represents the differences between the two countries!!
The wadding used was Warm and White by the Warm Company and the backing was a blue polka dot I picked up at a show - no name I'm afraid.
I used Glide threads top and bottom in White, 10000, Cobalt, 30647, Tomato, 70179 and Navy, 32965.  I love the way they pick out the design so well on the back ....
The arrows you can see were quilted on the red and blue middle border and represent our many trips back and forth between the two countries both on holidays and for setting up home!!
Linking up to Let's Bee Social over at Sew Fresh Quilts and this is also a finish of my 2016FAL Q2 list.
